N. Lewis's work
Nicole Lewis is a young, burgeoning artist who has embedded herself in the world of the fantastical in order to make sense of the one we live in now. Born and raised in Southern California, she spent her childhood years exploring the many different artistic ways of expressing herself through storytelling. After graduating from the University of California, San Diego with a Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Arts with an emphasis on drawing, she has had her illustrations published in the novel, “A Choice Within” and works as an educator for a non-profit organization, Art Trek, between projects. In the classes she runs, Lewis works closely with young students to help them explore and tell their own stories with art. With the aspirations of illustrating children’s books and creating her own graphic novels someday, she’s currently building a portfolio with an illustrative focus on experiementing and blending traditional and digital art into a cohesive whole.
Artist Statement
When you’re little and going through the world with young eyes, it all feels so overwhelmingly grand. By finding bits and pieces of magic scattered across your life, it becomes just a bit more manageable. But then you grow up. And the fantastical things you’ve loved for so long are supposed to just disappear. Or that’s what I had come to believe. 15 years after drawing my first dragon, what was supposed to vanish with age and experience has only grown, like a seed planted deep within my very being. I’ve only let it grow bigger and bigger with each passing day. From monsters to gods of old to the behemoths submerged in the depths of the ocean, it all runs rampant through my head until it spills out onto the page, taking form through the art I’ve been compelled to create my whole life. The intricate weaving of global cultures and their countless myths and stories has greatly influenced me, not just as an artist, but a person. As someone who has connected deeply with these stories, my priority is to educate myself thoroughly about what I depict in my art, and my audience by extension. My work is meant to be a safe corner for the inner child to gaze in awe at an impossibly grand being that the world of adults can often struggle to see. I want you to look at my work and be swept up in the inconceivable; the larger than life and beyond that of which only a child-like mind could fully encapsulate.
